The 7 skills needed to be in
AP Music Theory

The following skills are expected to be learned/reinforced over the summer. When school resumes in the fall, students registered for AP Music Theory will then be assessed on the below information. Students scoring 87% or higher will be allowed to continue in AP. Students falling below that mark will continue in regular Music Theory.

  1. Define and Identify basic elements of music: pitch, meter, beat, tempo, rhythm, dynamics, articulation, and accidentals.
  2. Identify and notate pitch in the appropriate register in four clefs: Treble, Bass, Alto, and Tenor. (C4 = middle C)
  3. Identify and write all major and minor key signatures.
  4. Identify and notate the following scales: Major, and the three forms of minor: Natural, Melodic, and Harmonic.
  5. Identify scale degree names. (ex. tonic, supertonic, etc.)
  6. Identify and Notate all Perfect, Major, Minor, Diminished, and Augmented intervals inclusive of an octave.
  7. Identify and notate rhythms in simple meter up to sixteenth notes and rests (8th note triplets included).
